The dancers and choreographers in LADF work in both the concert and Hollywood industry. Their works are on stage around the world in theaters and in feature films, tv shows, music videos, commercials and music tours. This sixth edition of LADF will also explore and present innovative and multicultural dance work to celebrate, develop, and promote women’s choreography. LADF is taking place in March this year in observance of Women’s History Month, to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Student ticket holders will require current student ID at the door.

Featuring Dr. Ananya Chatterjea, the company’s founder and choreographer, and performers who together speak thirteen languages, Shyamali (which means “dark green” in Bengali and evokes the resilience of grass to spring up when trodden upon) was created using story circles with women from local communities of color.

Mojácar Flamenco – Cantan los Fuegos Premier – ARC Pasadena – 8pm – $30/$20 for student/seniors

A guitar-led Flamenco Latin Jazz ensemble performs de Falla’s music, deconstructed and rearranged. – Cantan los Fuegos explores the relationship among four principal characters: Carmelo, Candela, José and Lucia, connected to each other through an unwanted marriage, deep love, anger and jealousy. The unnamed spirit that haunts Candela in the original ballet is José in this version, a character reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Iago, driven by manipulative malice to control the lives of Candela, Lucía and Carmelo, making life difficult for everyone. – At crucial moments the beautiful dance trio, El Circulo Mágico, encourage and support the other characters with their beauty and joy, leading all into forgiveness and celebration.

MashUp Contemporary Dance Company: “Press for Progress” showcase – MASHUP HQ – $10 – 7pm

“Press for Progress” is a day long dance festival celebrating the strong, creative, and passionate females in our community. An evening showcase featuring works from MashUp Contemporary Dance Company, Cat Cogliandro, Renee Baldwin, Erica Klein, MaryAnn Chavez, and many more. Along with the dance aspect of “Press for Progress”, MashUp’s studio will be filled with displays of work from some incredible local female fine artists including Farron Feiner, and there will be plenty of information on different female based charities and organizations to educate and support our community. “Press for Progress is a way to inspire, celebrate, and commemorate the movement for women’s rights through dance and the arts. MashUp aims to share the gift of dance and use it to empower young minds and bodies with a special importance placed on motivating girls and women to be strong, confident, and articulate females.

In the early eighth century BCE, the Neo-Assyrian Empire conquered the Northern Kingdom of Israel, from whence it has been said that ten of the twelve ancient tribes of Israel were deported and assimilated. These tribes are now lost to history, with a variety of folktales, legends, and theories about their fates having come about since that time. Some are told from the point of view of those who regard themselves as members of a lost tribe, while others are told from an outside perspective in order to make a case for self-serving outcomes.

Framed in the context of a gallery exhibition, lost tribes weaves together stories from the Assyrian conquest to the present day, tracing a world history of assimilation and dominance; of cultural conquest, annihilation, and survival. The performance incorporates choreography by Kai Hazelwood and a live percussion score composed by Michael Skloff, created in collaboration with Emilia Moscoso Borja and Alex Shaw. The production is written and directed by theatre dybbuk’s artistic director, Aaron Henne, and developed with the ensemble.

With extraordinary dancers and eloquent choreography, Clairobscur Dance presents it’s evening: Supremacy Ride. This performance features Laurie Sefton’s choreography with two world premieres and her sensual 2017 work Girl, Get Off (with original sound score by Bryan Curt Kostors).

Known for dense and detailed movements, Laurie Sefton’s award winning choreography is personal, emotional, and issue-based. It focuses on conveying complex ideas such as humanity, bullying, identity, climate change, memory loss, power, and sexuality. Dance has the power to be an action of change. It acts as a lens, magnifying concepts through abstraction and physicality, translating intangible ideas into movement. Choreography decodes emotional content and viscerally affects those who experience it. Ms. Sefton collaborates with researchers, composers, designers, poets and conceptual artists to investigate topics and develop a cohesive intention. For Supremacy Ride Ms. Sefton tackles issues sexual identity, societal stress brought about by the 2016 elections and collaborates with Hip Hop poet/spoken word artist Jason Chu.
